At Walking Food Tours UK, we’re passionate about showcasing the incredible independent food businesses we work with. But just as importantly, we’re committed to helping young people discover where great food comes from, meet the people behind it, and learn about the passion, skill and craftsmanship that goes into creating it.

Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming 15 students, aged between 8 and 15, to our Chester Market Education Tour – and what a fantastic morning it was.

Educational Food Tours in Chester

Our educational food tours in Chester are designed to be interactive, engaging and, of course, delicious.

Rather than simply tasting great food, students get to meet the people behind the businesses, hear their stories and ask as many questions as they like. Judging by the enthusiasm on display, there were certainly plenty of those.

These experiences are a brilliant way for schools, youth groups and organisations to bring food education to life outside the classroom.

Discovering Artisan Sourdough at Crustum

Our first stop was Crustum, where Vicky introduced the group to the world of artisan sourdough.

Students learned about traditional bread making, family recipes and sampled delicious sourdough alongside authentic Polish sausage. It was the perfect way to start the tour and gave the group a real insight into the care and skill behind great bread.

Building Fresh Fish Tacos at The Sandbar

Next, we visited The Sandbar, where owner Martin shared his knowledge and passion for seafood.

The students discovered more about oysters before rolling up their sleeves to build their own fresh fish tacos – a real highlight of the morning.

It was a fantastic hands-on experience and gave everyone the chance to try something fresh, fun and a little bit different.

Learning About Artisan Chocolate at Samuel Joseph

Our third stop took us to Samuel Joseph, where Sam and Claire welcomed the group into the wonderful world of artisan chocolate.

Sam explained the fascinating differences between white, milk and dark chocolate, giving students a real appreciation of how chocolate is made before everyone enjoyed one of Samuel Joseph’s handcrafted chocolates.

Unsurprisingly, this stop proved very popular.

A Sweet Ending at Pastry Pédaleur

Finally, we rounded off the experience at Pastry Pédaleur, where every student was treated to a beautifully crafted macaron – the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic morning.

It was a lovely way to finish the tour and another great example of the creativity and quality found inside Chester Market.

Bringing Food Education to Life

What made the experience so special wasn’t just the amazing food. It was seeing the students’ curiosity come to life.

They asked thoughtful, imaginative and often surprising questions, and every venue owner embraced the opportunity to share their knowledge and enthusiasm.

Our wonderful venue partners loved the interaction just as much as the students did, creating conversations that simply wouldn’t happen in a classroom.

Supporting Local Producers and Inspiring Young Food Explorers

Experiences like these perfectly capture what Walking Food Tours UK is all about: connecting people with passionate local producers, supporting brilliant independent businesses and creating memorable food experiences that educate, inspire and bring communities together.

A huge thank you to Vicky at Crustum, Martin at The Sandbar, Sam and Claire at Samuel Joseph, and the team at Pastry Pédaleur for making the morning such a success.

We’re already looking forward to welcoming the next group of young food explorers.
